WB Moore Company of Charlotte was chosen as the Division 16 contractor for the Wachovia Main Renovation project located at 301 S. Tryon Street in Charlotte. The Wachovia Main was originally constructed in 1954 as a 9-story building. Three more stories were added on in the 1960’s before it was renovated again in the late 1970’s at the same time it’s sister tower was completed. Both buildings and a connector called “the Link” became known as Two Wachovia Center in lieu of the 2001 merger of Wachovia and First Union. As the years went on, there were discussions of demolishing the entire aging building. It was soon decided, however, to instead keep the structure, demolish all of the interior and exterior, then rebuild with a new skin, walls, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire suppression systems. When finished, the 300,000 sq.ft. Wachovia Main Renovation will consist primarily of office environments with several retail areas at the Tryon street level. Project completion is scheduled for late January, 2006. |
Electrically, the building utilities consist of two new 4000A services, and one new 2000A retail service. New General Electric copper busduct risers and panelboards will be installed to service the tenant floors above. A 2000KW and an 800KW generator will be used for emergency and life safety backup power with a 500KVA UPS system for IDF and MDF circuits throughout the building. WB Moore is installing all of the new electrical systems in hard conduit without the use of MC-cable. Some of the more major challenges on this project have been the coordination of de-energizing the old systems while maintaining existing necessary systems and installing temporary power all while the demolition processes are performed. This has led to an exciting experience for WB Moore to be a part of this massive coordination between the installations of yester-year and the systems of today.
