Joyner Park Community Center

Hospitality and entertainment

The new 32,500 SF Joyner Park Community Center consists of a full-size basketball court, two floors of office space and activity rooms with an elevated jogging track around the entire second floor. WB Moore’s scope started with setting up a new 13.2 KV utility transformer to feed a 1200-amp, 120/208-volt, Main Distribution Panel with (4) parallel sets of 350 kcmil service entrance conductors. Additionally, a new 250 KW diesel generator and 800-amp ATS was set to tie into an 800-amp emergency panel for back-up power and installing 61 pole lights and bases with just over a mile and half of trenching.

The safety of the patrons was paramount on this project. The park was open until nightfall, and we constructed site lighting throughout. We deployed teams of 2-3 employees to install this while one member watched for patron traffic and politely steered their curiosity to a safe distance. We built a prefab department in the Warehouse in Raleigh specifically for this project. We were able to prefab all rough-in with one or two employees which kept the labor down to a minimum. This also indirectly led to a safer project as less employees were exposed to unsafe conditions on this out of the ground project.

Early season and heavy rains caused massive delays. We overcame this by only trenching up to 5 poles per day, so we could inspect and backfill quickly. This slowed down the normal progress and forced us to deploy three teams to ensure we stayed on schedule. The basketball floor had to cure for 30 days so it was a challenge to install all lighting, and ceiling fans prior to the wood floor being installed. We were able to get this accomplished by utilizing 2 JLG lifts and working closely with the other trades so we could meet the demanding schedule.
